Ankles, redux

September 14, 2020

New York State produces a regular summary of Forest Ranger rescue activity (https://www.dec.ny.gov/press/121202.html).  The vast majority of such activity for medical incidents comes from ankle injuries.  This is consistent with virtually all data on wilderness evacuations.

Although I have written on ankle sprains many times over the decades, the continued importance of the topic made me realize that it was time for a refresher.  My newest Adirondoc column takes this on.  The important take home point is that little has changed in the basic, simple, first aid for ankle sprains.  Their management continues to be straightforward, but they may present the wilderness traveler with daunting logistic challenges.
