I just uploaded an article from the March-April 2025 issue of Adirondack Life. The article synthesizes some work I have been doing studying the backgrounds of the individuals who made the first climb of Mt. Marcy, the highest peak in New York.
It is a little known fact that the explorers who made this trip in 1837 were actually a celebrated group of early 19th century American scientists, most of whom were known widely before and after the climb for their scientific accomplishments. In fact, having been part of the first climb of Marcy was such a trivial accomplishment in light of everything else they did, it is often overlooked in their respective biographies.
